ABSOLUTE ALIGNMENT CREATES VELOCITY
At the age of 28, I felt lost in my career.
I was underperforming at my job in an industry I didn't understand.
After a year in the role, I found myself at the bottom of the sales rankings.
Six months later, I was let go.
Before this failure, I thought I'd be in sales for the rest of my life.
But something just wasn't right.
I liked certain elements of sales — striving for goals, strategizing, and building relationships.
However, I wasn't in full alignment with who I was at my core.
Thanks to this quarter-life career crisis, I started to investigate my core values.
I found that there were a few things that really mattered to me:
I discovered that, if I wanted to build a successful and sustainable career for myself, I had to integrate these core values into my job.
Losing my job in 2018 was one of the greatest gift I ever received.
It allowed me to start with a blank canvas.
So, I started painting.
I created a business that was built around my core values.
When considering options, I eliminated anything that didn't incorporate all five of my core values.
This ruled out many paths that would've been misaligned with who I was.
After much deliberation, I settled on coaching and got started.
Over time, coaching led to consulting. Consulting led to speaking. And speaking led to training.
But all of it stayed within the framework of my pre-determined core values.
The result?
Two years later, in 2020, things took off.
I made more that year than I ever did in sales and my business grew from one to two employees (shoutout to my wife, Pema!).
And today, in the spring of 2023, we're still chugging along.
Here's what I've learned:
Absolute alignment creates velocity.
If you're going slow or moving backwards, check to see how your career is misaligned with your core values.
Then look for alternative paths that will inch you closer to absolute alignment.
It's in that special space you'll experience velocity towards your dream life — not to mention a little bit of magic.
