--- THE GIVER MENTALITY: WHY AND HOW TO ADOPT IT “Some people, when they do someone a favor, are always looking for a chance to call it in. And some aren’t, but they’re still aware of it – still regard it as debt. But others don’t event do that. They’re like a vine that produces grapes without looking for anything in return… They don’t make a fuss about it. They just go on to something else, as the vine looks forward to bearing fruit again in season.”
- Marcus Aurelius
In my career, I have seen three types of people:
Which type of person are you? I’ve spent my entire career in sales. And in sales your job is to ask for something. You ask for the meeting. You ask for the prospect’s commitments. You ask for the client’s payment. Given these requirements, you may think that sales people fall under one of the first two categories:(#1) giving and expecting immediate compensation or (#2) giving with strings attached. But, the best sales people do neither. The best sales people fall under category (#3): they give everything and ask for nothing in return. Think about it this way. You need a service. Maybe you need a website developer, a social media marketer, or a financial advisor. Which of the three types of people I listed above would you want to work with? The more you give, the more you’re liked and trusted in return. The question is, how do we become the “no-strings-attached giver” if it isn’t your natural disposition? It starts by shifting our mindset away from the “tit-for-tat” mentality. Too often we think that every exchange must be equal. But this just isn't the case. We must trust in the positive flow of energy that results from giving. If we give a great idea, complete a service for free, or do a favor for Person A, we will—in time— be rewarded for our deed, but not necessarily from Person A or in the time horizon we expect. Our reward may come from Person B, C, or D. It may come in one day, 10 days, or a year later. That's the part we can’t control. What we can control is how much we give and the way in which give. The more we give with no strings attached, the more we'll get in return. If you find yourself struggling to adopt the giver mentality, remember the quote from Marcus Aurelius. We must act “like a vine that produces grapes without looking for anything in return.” It’s as simple as that.
